Trans Fat Consumption causes Infertility (Study News)

Trans fats may cause Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome because they can bind to the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor, which, when activated, can improve ovulatory function.

The study looked at data from the Nurses' Health Study. Researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health analyzed information from 18,555 women who were all married and trying to get pregnant between the years of 1991 and 1999.

The study found that there was no link between ovulation-related infertility and overall fats consumption or calorie intake. However, the study found that if 2 percent of total calories came from trans fats instead of the healthier monounsaturated fats, the risk for ovulation-related infertility doubled. For every 2 percent increase in the amount of calories that women received from consuming trans fats instead of carbohydrates, the risk of infertility increased by 73 percent.
